Akron Road Rehabilitation Design, Mission Support Alliance
Hanford, Washington
Akana and VNSFS prepared the civil engineering design for the Akron Avenue pulverization and road rebuild, which included design documents and specifications, design review comment forms for tracking response to and disposition of comments, and other supporting documents required for protocols and procedures unique to the Hanford Site.
Akron Avenue has seen significant pavement distress since its construction in the 1940s. Site investigation completed by the Akana/VNSFS team was required to identify the existing road section, and samples of the road base were analyzed to determine whether recycling the existing road by pulverization was a viable design option. One challenge was to predict driving responses of commuters when an unpaved “shortcut” was barricaded or incorporated into the final design. This design element took several iterations prior to implementation to ensure drivers’ safety.
